Overview
This is the shortest route to the summit of White Horse Hill. It is a very scenic and enjoyable hike with about a 9.5 mile round trip. At a fast pace you can go up and back in 4 hours, but you will want to go slower to enjoy the beautiful scenery.
Approach
Start at the Big Bonito Trailhead (T#36) See the "Getting There" on the main page.
Route Description
Hike approximately 1 and 1/4 miles to the intersection of T#36 (Big Bonito) and T#37 (Little Bonito) trails. Stay on T#36 and hike 3/4 of a mile to the intersection of T#36 and T#35 (Aspen). Make a left turn on T#35 and start hiking up a more steep trail. You will hike approximately 1 and 1/2 miles before you leave the forest and start switchbacking up into a bowl where the creek (Aspen Canyon) ends. Hike another 3/4 of a mile up and onto a saddle where you will get your first view of the summit of White Horse Hill and the interesection of the Crest Trail #25. Make a right turn on the Crest Trail and begin your ascent up to the summit before the Crest Trail makes its way around. Total distance to the summit approximately 4 and 3/4 miles with an elevation gain of 2,250 ft.
Essential Gear
Just a good pair of trail runners will do. Expect snow on the trail in winter even in low snow years because of the trails location away from the sun. Bring plenty of water in the summer.
