Approach

Start from the southern end of the Crest Trail (trail #25). See the "Getting There" section on the main page.

Route Description

From the parking lot, begin hiking west up the Crest Trail. Hike about 1/4 of a mile until a trail splits off to the right and crosses a broken barbed wire fence (see picture). I marked the trail with the #16 written with rocks on the ground. Begin hiking up this unmarked trail (trail #16) as it parallels the fence for a ways on either side. The trail will pass under a ridge through some trees on the north and then climb back up on to the ridge. Follow this trail straight up to the summit some 900 ft. from bottom to top. The trail is faint in some places. If you have to do any bushwacking through dense shrubbery, you have wandered off the trail.

You may be tempted to downclimb the south face to access the Crest Trail to make this a round trip instead of having to return the same way; however, dense scrub oak and thorny shrubbery make the descent very difficult and not very fun. The east face route is the only way to avoid these obstacles.

Essential Gear

A good pair of trail runners and a wind breaker is recommended in colder months. High winds are always possible as air is compressed up from the valley to the west 6,000 ft. below and blown over these mountains. Bring plenty of water in the warmer months.
