Reno to Austin via US-50, about 170 lonely miles. East on US-50 from Austin to NV-376 about 14 miles. South on NV-376 to Kingston turnoff, about another 14 miles. Main road through Kingston and toward the start of the hike: about 9 miles, maybe further. You have options.

Route Description

From the road at the 8,660' saddle, hike south up knob 9,335 (or drive this if you have good 4wd). Hike south, traversing the west-facing slopes through sage and intermittent trees, to gain a saddle at 10,100 feet. Hike directly up the talus and scree mix, sometimes steep, to gain the summit massif. The highest point is the furthest of the three summit 'points'. No trail but route finding is very easy.

Essential Gear

Non snow conditions: standard hiking gear. Long pants and good boots a must. Expect lots of knee-high sage brush. Trekking poles very useful.

Minor snow: crampons help with traverses.

Major winter snow: can't comment.
