Rough route overlay of the Normal Route on Nelion, with key features marked. Mackinder's Chimney is slightly down & L from the base of the One O'Clock Gully. *note* upper portion of route (after Baillie's Bivy until where it jogs R before curving back L) is actually on other side of the S ridge, until crossing back over at the technical traverse. 6 January, 2006

Route clarification

Thanks for adding this nice annotated route picture, Diggler.

One point worth clarifying is that above Bailies Bivy the route ducks over the SW ridge and behind McKinders Gendarme for a few pitches (including the superb De Graaf's Variation pitch). The route then cuts back to the right above McKinders Gendarme.

Re: Route clarification

Oh yeah- I didn't bother to check the final product after resolution reduction! I actually used a dotted line to indicate that, but the separations are so small that you can't really tell now. Will make a note of it in the caption- thanks for pointing that out. Hey Ben, 2 S. Africans did the climb the same day we did- Mark Johnston & Rog (don't have his last name right now)- know 'em? Mark said that he knows you. They camped next to us at Austrian Hut & we hung out w/ them on Nelion.

Re: Route clarification

Yep - I know Mark and Roger well. Sounds like they also had a successful trip to Mt Kenya. They're both from Cape Town and the climbing scene here is quite small.

Thanks also for the feedback on the East African grading conversions.
