Route Climbed: Twin Lakes Trail up/SE Ridge down Date Climbed: September 26, 2004  Sucess!

After summitting Elkhorn Peak, I hit the Elkhorn Crest Trail over to the junction of ridges south of RCB. Up the slopes along the ridge to the summit raving against some clouds moving in. Made the summit and the clouds went on past without dropping rain which it looked like they would. Descended back down to the pass and decided to take the SE ridge back. Fun hike/scramble along the rocks on the ridge. Descended the ridge to where the forest begins and I worked my way back down to the trail below Twin Lakes. Then it was easy sailing back the trail.

See Dean's entry below. Fantastic day, fun climb, great views. I really enjoyed the Elkhorns, this being my first time to visit the area. I'll be back!

Route Climbed: Southeast ridge Date Climbed: Sept 25, 2004  Sucess!

Fellow SP'ers Bob Bolton and Dennis Poulin and myself had a gorgeous day in eastern Oregon so we put it to good use by climbing up via Twin Lakes to do both Rock Creek Butte and Elkhorn Peak. We chose to do the Southeast ridge as the most direct route to this nice summit. After climbing RCB, we went over and did Elkhorn Peak, one of Oregon's 100 highest peaks. Beautiful weather and we met only two other hikers all day in this gorgeous area and they were from Boise.

ith Fred and Bruce Unger. Lots of snow in the basin where we camped, but otherwise great weather and fine views.

Route Climbed: SE Ridge to E Side Date Climbed: 22 June 1974  Sucess!

Climbed with Moni and good friend Bruce Unger.

We camped at Twin Lakes, then climbed the unnamed peak (Point 8,508) just south of the lakes and from there followed the long connecting ridge to the east flank of Rock Creek Butte which was easily climbed.

This route provided some interesting moderately steep snow and easy scrambling.

Route Climbed: Twin Lakes Trail Date Climbed: August 3, 2004 and September 14, 2005  Sucess!

I hiked in to twin lakes and camped. There was a lot of thunder and lightning overnight, but no rain. The sky started to clear a little by morning. I scared some mountain goats on the way up Elkhorn Ridge. The final scramble to the summit was pretty fun, and the view was great. I could see the Strawberry, Greenhorn, Aldrich, and Wallowa mountains. The most recent entry I could find in the summit register was from 2002.

September 2005: Did this one again as part of a four day backpacking trip in the Elkhorns. Started the day with Elkhorn prior to RCB, and then afterwards I hiked to Summit Lake to camp for the night. Gotta love the summit register, an ammo box with emergency toilet paper, a geological map of the Elkhorn Peak Quadrangle, rolling papers, and all kinds of miscellaneous entries dating back at least to the 80's. Found it interesting that the Summit Post contingency all used the same piece of paper.
