Warm day in the Winchesters  Sucess!

The drive in was still grueling even though the road had been regarded recently. A couple of creek crossings were pretty gnarly and some hills pretty steep. The hike itself was pretty straight forward as you can see the entire route along the ridge just looks of rocks in the grass, Views were outstanding.

Warm day and brush  Sucess!

When you aren't used to the heat, the hike is tougher than it should be. The drive in is actually the crux as the 11 mile "road" takes 90 minutes to drive. High clearance and good tires are mandatory as this one will beat the heck out of your vehicle.
Most the hike is best taken by going right over the ridge and avoiding traversing but we found that out on the way back. We needed lots of water as this can be a hot hike at this time of year.

Hike was fun, road in was gruesome  Sucess!

Four of us hiked this as an SAHC (Southern AZ Hiking Club) outing, coming in from the north. The forest road is brutal: it took us 90 minutes to cover about a dozen miles. The hike itself was easy enough, following the "bovine ridge" route - the slightly off-set NNW ridge starting at some cow tanks. The big beasts have managed to bash in some paths to within 400 feet of the top, and the paths in places help, but it's still a lot of loose rock, cactus, cow poo and steep sections. The topo map is in error: the summit is very clearly the south end of the smallish ridge, a good 10-15 higher than the northern points. Trip report

with John Vitz  Sucess!

The brush on the east side of this peak is
reported to be terrible - in fact this is
one of the 3 Arizona "W" peaks that DPSers
fear on account of brush:
Winchester HP
Whetstone HP
Weaver Peak

John Vitz drove two of us in to the north side of
Brush Canyon, and the NE ridge to the summit was
a pretty decent bushwack route to the top.
