Rawl's Predecessor

Rawl's Predecessor

Quite a mix of fixed pro is encountered on the Northeast Face route of Steins Pillar!! Some of it is courtesy of the original ascent party, circa 1950. The lag bolt in upper right corner was confirmed to have been placed by FA party in 1950 (saw these on P3, P5); two old pitons "stacked" (P5); two rusty pitons stacked and driven into an old bolt sleeve (P5); a rusty piton sticking halfway out of the bolt sleeve (P5); in center, a new looking bolt. These are interspersed among the "ancient" pro and reduce the seriousness of the route to probably an A1+ to A2 (October 30, 2004).

Scary looking pro

Some of those old rusty things look pretty scary - but nice pictures though! Also, is that an orange and blue color scheme I see on that biner? If so, it's mine. You can return it next week :)

Re: Scary looking pro

Thanks Jim.

Yeah, don't want to take a fall onto one of these babies - some of them flexed quite a bit under my "dead" weight only.

.....nice try....that's a blue/red/black/green color scheme :)

Re: Scary looking pro

Jim,

You can't steal my gear's color scheme! I have orange and blue to honor my alma mater, University of Illinois. And also the Chicago Bears!

Therefore, all of your gear must be forfeit to me. Please bring it to the Portland SP get-together next week.

Thank you,

Brian

Re: Scary looking pro

Definitely guys,

I'll bring all that stuff in so that we can all sit down and go through it. I'd recommend you both bringing large duffel bags to carry all that re-gained gear back....

:)

Looking forward to that beer drinking session!!

Re: Scary looking pro

Hey Brian ... me too ... Da Bears and the Illini (although neither team is currently any good for bragging rights!) I guess we'll have to settle it by who spent the longest time in Champaign :) -jim

Re: Scary looking pro

Well, I grew up in Peoria mostly and spent 4 years in Champaign in school(85-89). But I still have relatives in Champaign and usually still get there once a year or so. You live there or go to school there (or both)? Interesting. Should have a few things to talk about next week.

(and yeah, they both suck really really really really bad this year.) :- (

Hey guys I may have spent more time than you in Champaign when I labored through slavery known as grad school...

Re: Scary looking pro

I went to school there for BS and MS ... and my 6.5 years beat your 4 years :) Haydar, stay out of this - you aren't using an orange & blue labeling scheme (although your 12? years put us both to shame!!!)

Re: Scary looking pro

How the hell did a bunch of Illini end up in Portland? This is kind of eerie. When were you guys there? Don't tell me you are all Alpha Sigs too? How far does this go? Are you my brothers? Do we have the same mom? If so, I have a few Christmas gift ideas for you to get me. :- )

12 years in Champaign?? That's a lot of Garcia's pizza, dude.

Really interesting!

This is a fascinating image. Some of that stuff sure looks sketchy!
