Roughness of trails

Definitely correct about east coast vs west coast trails. I've done a lot of the more difficult hikes in the West - Grand Canyon R2R, Whitney, etc., - and outside of the distance and elevation, the trails themselves were easy going - wide, clear, etc. Trails in the East, and the northeast especially, are REALLY rough - often no switchbacks, extremely rocky, very technical, etc. You're right about looking for every foot placement. Makes stuff like this much more fatiguing.
