I just wanted to share that our experience at the Canchola's was negative and I wouldn't recommend it. Maybe it's not what it used to be.

The room was loud (both activity from a neighboring house and within the Canchola complex as well). The entire property is filled with 4x4 vehicles so it is not at all a "hostel" or "family home" experience. Keep low expectations for the bathroom. None of those things are deal-breakers. But read on.

They kept "forgetting" to give our group the water that they had explicitly said they would provide, and then tried to have our group pay for entry into the park, which was also supposed to be included in the fee. On the morning that we left for Piedra Grande, they told us that we could keep our stuff in the room, and the door would be locked and we could go back into it when we came down from the mountain. Well, after coming down from the mountain there was another group in the room and all of our stuff had been moved (and not to an obvious location). Passports, cash, everything. Even if everything were accounted for, that's just a major violation.

Our dinners were just OK (you would do better going to a random taco stand in Tlachichuca), and on the morning after coming down from the mountain after the hike, we were told that they were just too busy to do breakfast. Which we had paid for. Breakfast wasn't great anyway, but still.
