Was this national park effected by the dissolution of Yugoslavia? Were any of Yugosalvia's national parks dismantled after the breakup?

No, all the national parks that existed in Yugoslavia were inherited by new countries and continue to exist. Also some new national parks were founded by new countries, like North Velebit NP in Croatia, for example.

Thanks Michael!! Yes, for the time around Easter Paklenica is best choice on whole Velebit. It is just by the sea while in the high part of the mountain there is still lot of snow and all roads that lead high on the mountain are covered. In Paklenica you can do everything: climb, hike, photograph beautiful scenery and go to the snow if you wish. For example if you wish to climb Vaganski Vrh, highest on Velebit, which is above Paklenica, you must have crampons, so take them with you because you never know if you'll wish to go up there :-) There is no way to swimm at this time of year! Sea temperature now is around 10° and then will be maybe 12°. This year Easter is at the end of March and at that time of year nothing is green yet. But all in all that is nice time to visit, there is plenty of water in Paklenica and temps on the coast are around 15°. If you come I'd be glad to make a route or two with you.

All the best to You and Brigitte

Thank you Sasha, for your answer and your invitation. We look forward to this time and hope, all will go over well.

Here the storm soughs and the snow flakes swirl round the house. Funny!

Best regards Michael and Brigitte

Very useful page, lots of information. We are planning a one day trip to Vaganski vrh from Starigrad Paklenica during the summer. It will be a long trip, I'm not sure we can do that during daylight. Could you please tell me if you have any information about the opening hours of the park gate. We would like to leave the car in the parking place, but intend to start as early as possible. Thank you

Martin

Thanks Martin! Outside of working hours gate is open and you can enter freely and start when ever you want. Yes, it’s a long trip, 10h of walking at least!

If you want to do it in one day my suggestion is to do it this way:

-from the hut climb Vaganski Vrh via Bukova Staza (more direct) or via Struge refuge on Struge high plateau (less steep, bit around)

-Descend via Lipa Staza (descriptions of trails are on Vaganski Vrh page)

2 day combination:

-reach Struge refuge during the day and sleep over

-on the second day climb Vaganski Vrh and descent via Lipa Staza to the hut. This is easier combination. In fact you can even extend the second day and from Vaganski continue to Cicina Dolina junction above Ivine Vodice refuge and descent back to Paklenica that way.

Cheers,

Sasha
