The Bug

The Bug is a bit beefier than Black Diamond ATC. Therefore it heats slightly less when used for descend. Also, I feel that the slots are a bit smaller which gives improved friction, especially for skinny double/twin rope use. This very same fact makes it less than ideally suited for use with very thick single ropes (10.5mm still works reasonably well though).

This has been my belay device of choice for the last three years and ive still yet to find a better piece of gear.



Easy to use with single ropes, double ropes and twins the Bug seems to handle it all. Whether you’re belaying or abseiling, the massively radiused edges are easy on your ropes. The ribbed profile improves your grip when you are loading the rope and helps to dissipate heat on those long rappels.

It’s a simple design (with a few refinements) and works. I have used it for over 2 years now and had no problems; it feeds nicely, is kind on ropes yet still holds a fall well.
Like all belay device is does get hot on long abseils.
I would personally find it a bit too slick for ropes narrower than 8.5 mm to belay a leader with but then DMM say “The Bug is a classic belay device, happiest handling ropes from 9 to 11mm”.
I have used a fat 11mm+ rope with it and although it was a little difficult to push blight though the device once in it worked and feed fine.
