Our SD Tiros Assault tent...

Our SD Tiros Assault tent (rented from Feathered Friends in Seattle) just below Panorama Point on the morning of March 27, 2003. Staking and guying down the tent well was essential for a comfortable night's sleep. It was blowing enough that we cooked dinner and breakfast inside the tent.

This photo speaks to what I like about mountaineering

John: I really like your photos. This one I like especially.

I thought I had lost my desire to climb again. But your photos brought to mind that old desire.

I am a 52 year old fat guy now, with a wife and five children. But I would like to try it again, before I die.

The first time I saw Ranier was in 1976, I wanted to climb it then. It was bathed in the pink/orange glow of evening. I could see the big blocks of ice and snow just hanging up there.

My problem is, I like climbing alone. I don't know why that is,it's just the way I am. It's just me and the mountain. Sounds really cheesy huh? Plus I can do things my own way and in my own time.

Ranier is not the kind of mountain you want to climb alone,I know, unless you are suicidal, or crazy. And I don't have that much experience. I've only climbed Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Elbert in Colorado.[Mt.St. Helens 20 days before the big eruption of May 1980.]

Even if I got in shape I doubt I would be fast enough to keep up with a group. I'm from "Flatland.[ Missouri ] And I hate guided tours. Maybe someday. Anyway great photos. cowlitz
