West Onion
Cool area with great ocean views. Bit of a nasty bushwhack getting up the south ridge of West Onion. Summit was socked in.

West Onion
Found the road as of May 2017 was posted open for mountain bikes. Old friend Cascadetraveler and I biked up the road in nice weather and utilizing a gps track I downloaded from Peakbagger took the complete wrong route up and down to summit west onion. Going up, we used someones descent path which they said was awful. I mistakenly thought we were on their ascent path, whoops. Basically straight up from the south, through deep brush and climbing moss covered rock faces. Going down we decided we didn't want to do that again and ditched straight off the west side. This worked brilliantly... for about 200 feet then we hit deep deep brush concealing fairly substantial cliffs. Oh and rain also. It started raining on descent. Loads of fun, choose your path on West Onion carefully.

Long hike
Made it to the top on this attempt, taking a longer route to approach from the west. Earlier this year we attempted to approach from the east and were turned back by snow. See trip report.

Second time...
...up to the summit, this time I took the bike. Even though I probably pushed my bike for about 70% of the approach, the ride back down was well worth it. Unfortunately the fog held at about 2500', so the views from the summit were none. It stayed dry, the wind was calm, and the temp was very mild...so it was a great trip.

Turned back by snow
Approached from logging roads north of Black Butte, a long walk with permission to cross two private properties. Followed abandoned logging roads to the bowl on the east side. Ran into snow at about 1700' and it was 2-3' deep in places. We didn't have snowshoes so it was tough going even with trekking poles. Turned back at the end of the road, about 2200' with clouds approaching from the south. Will try again in the summer.
Peeled, sliced, diced, West Onion is done! Rock slide at MP 2.1. Looked less than a year old. Very little snow left. Big thank you to the elk for maintaining trails near the summit. OR P2k 11/74.

Fun
After 7 miles of logging roads we were very happy to find the mountain, we bushwacked and scrambled our way up. some of the most fun I have had in the coast range.

Beautiful Views!
After spending quite some time walking a logging road (enjoying views of the ocean and other peaks), and then a while scaling around the base trying to find a non-technical way up, it was incredible to reach the summit. Very windy with magnificent views from every direction! Excited to get back and explore it's neighbors!

"West Onion Peak"
My friend Leon Cheney and I headed out to the Oregon coast on a perfectly glorious and warm December day during one of the driest winters ever in the Pacific Northest. We didn't climb Onion Peak per se, but rather the higher (3076 feet), unnamed point west of Onion. Because it is higher than the named summit, West Onion gets all the prominence on the ridge, hence my interest. West Onion is the 37th most prominent peak in Oregon, at 2,356 feet of prominence.

4th time will be a charm
March 12, 2005- first attempt, got to the base to late in the day and had to turn around.
April 9, 2005- Second, failed once again. We looked for a route by going around it. This time we brought bikes to cruise back to the car.
June 19, 2005- The road we usually took said No Trespassing so we went a different road. Yet again we go to the base to late. That day we did like 30 miles because we didnt know which road to cut off on.
4th time will be a charm

Long Day
I spent many hours researching the best way into this peak. All the roads are gated. I took the shortest route from the gate. The days totals were 15 miles round trip with a total of 3400' elevation gain. I spent so much time searching for the route to the top that by the time I got there, I only had time for ONE beer!
