Off Balanced Rock  Sucess!

Fun climb. Led it one day and came back and soled it the next morning. This is an ideal solo because like all deep and wide clefts of sandstone, it is much cleaner than most cracks. When I led it, I led it as one, not placing any gear on the first pitch which makes rope drag a minimal issue. You can sow the 2nd pitch chimney portion up with a crack right in front of you whole way. The two fixed raps, allowing for a single rope, were in good condition as of 2016.

Reverse canyoneering  Sucess!

I'm used to sqeezing DOWN tight slot canyons, but not so much up them. The chimney on P2 was unique and awesome but it did require a lot of effort; it wasn't difficult, just strenuous. It protects well the whole way up if you stay close to the crack. A fall is unlikely anyway as the chimney is so narrow you can just cam yourself in to chill out. It felt like upwards canyoneering!

crazy Moab  Sucess!

So there we were - sitting on the main drag in Moab hitting that ice cream like there's no tomorrow. A clean-looking grandma taps me on the shoulder with a "Are you loooost?" to my surprised "Huh?". She repeats: "Are you lost?"...to my "why?"...to her "because you are in this town!". More surprise on my part. Grandma continues without pause and with a sour smile: "This town is a hellhole!" I expect some religious spiel to follow but instead grandma walks off down the street bothering no one else in sight.

WTF was that? Shirley's smiling. We continue to lose ourselves in the vanilla cones for the next 10 minutes when I feel a tap and see grandma's face 2 inches from mine. I nearly fall off the bench as she says: "are you one of them rockers" (grandma points up to rim above town)...."ohhh - yeah?????" I respond. Grandma now really gets in my face. I smell no liquor. "YOU are sooooooo DUMB!!" and "we don't lose too many of them rockers here - more bikers and offroaders; not rockers". I was shocked before, now I'm just fu.king stunned. Grandma turns away with a "You be careful out there!"....

After that we climbed Off-Balanced Rock. For the next two nights I'd wake up in a pool of sweat thinking to myself "WTF?!"
