The unusual visibility of this mountain made it well known with ancient Romans, Greeks and (according to the tradition) even Egyptians. Some Greek legends had the garden of the Hesperides (where Jason went looking for the Golden Fleece) here and not, as now generally believed, in the Caucasus.



Leonardo da Vinci was literally obsessed by its perfect cone shape, and said it was the "perfect mountain".
