Although I can imagine being charged 500 pesos for a guide and two horses if I was alone, I went with a few Mexican friends and let them do the bargaining. The guides originally wanted to charge us 200 pesos for each person (including 200 pesos for the guide) we were able to get the price down to 180 pesos each. So my advice would be to go with some non-gringo friends if possible!
