Hmm - I'm not sure about the resemblance - does the Columbia River Gorge have vineyards all over the place? Or castles? Maybe train tracks...

Mouse Tower

Is this the one in the story of the Bishop of Mayence who retreated to it after being besieged by mice and rats? I think they ate him up in his tower.

Yes, Mark, it's the same. The Archbishop Hatto of Mainz retreated to that tower during a draught and took all the provisions he could get with him. His people were left to starve while he was enjoying his life in the tower. Howver, mice and rats moved over to the little island and ate his provisions and later him. That's how the story goes, anyway and it is very similar in its morale to Poe's Red Death.
