Nelson, Farnsworth, and Kessler
I don't understand why Pole Canyon is not the accepted route up Nelson. Beautiful trail to the ridge, and while the ridge walk was difficult in white out spring conditions that required switching several times in and out of snowshoes, I think it would mostly be a nice walk later in the season.

Once again
Climbed from Pole Canyon this time. Hit Point 9175 as well as Nelson Peak. Very cold day but equally beautiful when not bushwacking or post-holing. Great day!

Barneys, Nelson, and 8100
Started with Barney. The bushwhack to Nelson was easier than expected as I would find an occasional very overgrown trail, but once it was over, there was still 1000' to climb to the top. Somewhere along the way I decided I might as well throw Peak 8100, Eric's "Nelson Ridge" into the mix. Getting from Nelson to where the ridge splits at point 8497 wasn't too bad, lots of brush, but some faint trails. From there, things got very bad. It was a mix of dense oak brush, dense mountain mahogany, or 2' to chest high shrubs. Sometimes they were so thick I could walk on top of their branches. Getting from 8100 to the descent ridge was no picnic either, but was a little easier. The descent ridge was harder than expected with some minor brush, but mostly the problem was difficult footing as there were many loose rocks scattered about. Just before reaching the summit of 8100 at around 2:50pm I remembered that I was supposed to be at my neighbor's 96th birthday party at 6pm. Whoops. I made it back to the car a few minutes before 6, buised, scratched, and clothes in tatters.
Awesome spring hike. 10.5 miles round trip. 4,100 feet in elevation gain. Snowshoes needed in the canyon above 7,000 feet.

Nelson Peak
This is kind of a miserable hike. I followed the route listed on this page by Eric Willhite, over peak 8100 and on to the top. Don't get me wrong this is an awesome mountain with awesome cliff bands around the summit and killer views, but the bushwhack from peak 8100 for the next 1.5 miles was up there as one of the worse I have done. Cursing and crawling were a prerequisite. Roundtrip stats were 6,171' gain and 13.8 miles. Did this P1K with fellow SP'er gjagiels.

Favorite Northern Oquirrh Hike
Climbed from Pass Canyon. Some bushwacking from the pass between Barneys Peak and Nelson but not too bad. Outstanding views of Salt Lake and Tooele Valleys!

Hard peak
My second attempt at Nelson. Drove up Bates Canyon to the gate. The road is extremely nasty with large ruts, steep grades, and big boulders. At the gate (5300') climbed the spur ridge to the north sub peak. Traversed south to Nelson Peak. Snow conditions were miserable with significant bush wacking. Views were astounding. Trip info was 7.4 miles RT with 4900 feet elevation gain
