The crash occurred in the winter of 1948. Three people died. I think the cause was turbulent winds in the mountains. There's some info on the Navajo Peak page. Thanks for reading!
I can augment your comments about the descent route you took. I went up Navajo via Niwot Ridge in 2009 and went down the same way. It was a slick, nasty downclimb.
