Arrived in Fukuoka yesterday afternoon and depart today at 3:45pm. A short stop but enough to summit the highest peak of Japan's third largest island. What's more, I used only public transport. Airport bus to Hakata station then JR to Bunganakamura. By foot and thumb to Choja Baru last night. This morning a predawn start and walk out to Makinoto Toge. More roadwork back to Chojabara Baru to pick up my cache. The time was looking bleak until I boarded an airport bound bus from Kokinoe and got to the airport around 1:30pm. (The bus turned out to be much cheaper than the train, if you know the schedule it would be much more convenient to take the bus than JR both ways.)

The hike itself was nice. Though I did most of it before sunrise, I was able to see volcanic steam and a steady stream of Japanese dayhikers coming up from Makinoto Toge on my way out. (5000 yen + 200 rmb)
