Very entertaining and useful report. Folks can get some good info. from your experiance. I now feel better about my black toenails that I got this year on Mt. Gould with boots that were too small. I traded them in for a pair of trailrunners and did Whitney in August. They worked get even on talus. Try straight pepperoni next time, the grease is good for your joints.
Thanks, Dave! Did the black toenails come off or did it go away by itself? Not looking forward to being a nail-less wonder... And thanks for the pepperoni tip!
Nice report. Wow! You did take a lot of food. But that's much better than not taking enough. Your "tips" section will be useful to others I'm sure.
I'm a real veteran when it comes to black toenails. If it's really black, it will fall off but not before it grows a protective shell underneath.
Hate to tell you this, but we did Gould on July 9. After 2 months they are still on solid and totally black. My family gets grossed out when I go barefoot around the house. It looks bad but doesn"t hurt or stop me from hiking.
Well at least I can paint mine red or pink and get away with it! Heck, I could even paint them all black and still be in style. Just might do that actually.....
So it took exactly two months for my toenail to fall off. The purple nail on my longest toe is just growing out - it's got a centimeter or two of pink at the bottom -- but the big toenail came off last night. I didn't even know it was going to - it looked kind of cloudy with just a tinge of purple. I thought it was in better shape than the other one. The undernail is purple too, so I guess it might fall off as well! Yikes, the beauty sacrifices I make for climbing! My mother would be appalled....
Thanks for the very entertaining trip report. I will be doing Whitney next summer, for the first time. I know how you felt about the black toenails. I get them too from marathon training. So, did the "undernail" fall off too?
Thanks TJ. Sorry for the delayed response. Had knee surgery 11/9 and still can't bend my left leg so haven't done much web surfing. And no, I didn't lose the undernails but they never fully returned to normal. My guess is that if you're in marathon shape, Whitney's going to be a piece of cake for you. Have a great time and thanks for your comment.
