The only thing that's kept me off of the Blacks this winter is that I had to spend my vacation time to travel to Los Angeles. But we've slotted three days for Roan Mountain in March.
You should not have a lack of snow at Roan! My next hike will be close to there, either Hump or Grassy Ridge from Yellow Gap. Enjoy!
