Mt. Index as seen from Mt....

Mt. Index as seen from Mt. Baring to the east on Aug. 10, 1997. To the right of Index is Mt. Persis (5,464 ft). The small hump at the right edge of the picture is Haystack Mountain (2,715 ft). The timbered mountain in front of Index is Philadelphia Mountain (4,258 ft).

vantage point?

Was this taken from the basin below the two summits on Baring? Thinking about a winter ascent of Baring in a few weeks if weather cooperates.

Re: vantage point?

Yes.

Baring is a good winter ascent objective. Although, in high avy conditions the basin and slope to notch could be in a danger alley. You might be able to hug the right (wall) side and avoid the alley. Don't take my word for it, though.

Most likely you will have trouble getting up the road to the trailhead. You will most probably have to walk or snowshoe one or two miles of it, maybe more.

Re: vantage point?

Bummer. One of the things that drew me to it was that it looked like one I could get to the trailhead in Winter. Ah well, it's not that long of a hike, a couple more miles will only make it better. (Man, I've been reading YOUR trip reports too much.)

Got any guess as to what the angle of that gully to the notch runs? Hard to tell from the photos posted. I read where it's got avy potential in winter like you mention. From the photos on SP, I thought the same thing about hugging the right side although it looks like you can only do it so much before you have to commit to at least a bit out in the open.
