Approach

Starting point is the alpine hut "Stahlhaus" (1728 m) which is located direct at the Torrenerjoch, southwest of "Hoher Goell".
There are several possibilities to reach "Stahlhaus":
1. You can hike up from Berchtesgaden or Koenigsee (1100 meters ascent, about 3 to 4 hours).
2. You can drive by car or by bus to Hinterbrand (600 meters ascent, about 2 hours).
3. You can go up with the cableway "Jennerbahn" and walk the little rest to "Stahlhaus" (almost an even path, about half an hour).

Route Description

From "Stahlhaus" you walk the path to the north up to the "Jägerkreuz"(hunters cross). From there up over a steep hill with rocks and grass to the "Hohes Brett" (meaning high board), a very popular "sight-seeing summit" for the mere hikers, with summit cross and summit log! Up to this point there aren't any difficulties and due to the southside exposure you can hike this part until late autumn!
From "Hohes Brett" on you follow more or less along the ridge and the hike gets a little bit more serious, especially in early spring and late autumn. Parts of the route are north exposed and therefore snow and ice can be possible!
Most difficult part is a steep groove which can be snow- and icefilled until summer and subsequently you have to traverse under the north side of the "Kleiner Archenkopf". There is a (more or less huge) snowfield almost the whole year round!
After the traverse you reach "Goellscharte" (the gap between the "Goell summit" and the "Archenkopf") and from there on it's only a steep and exhausting ascent through scree to the summit. Don't be too delighted when you see the summit cross - it's not the "Goell" summit but just a secondary - the real "Hoher Goell" summit ist still 100 meters higher!
The whole route is all the way marked with red spots and as long as there is no snow in the route or heavy fog it's almost impossible to get lost!
The whole hike takes about 4 hours from "Stahlhaus" to the summit.

Essential Gear

In the summer months there is no gear necessary.
In early spring (and of course in winter) there will be a huge snowfield under the "Kleiner Archenkopf" and the steep groove will be snow- and icefilled. So crampons could be useful.

Route Comment

The snowfield beneath Archenkopf is very dangerous, especially in late summer, because there may be bare ice without covering snow. Several mountaineers already fell a victim to it. So crampons ("Grödeln") are useful at every time of the year.

Thanks for the input, guenni!
I am going to rewrite this passage of the text.
On the other hand, I don't think the snowfield is too dangerous and I don't want to scare people away!
I have crossed the snowfield two times:
Last November there was a lot of snow, the snow was soft and therefore it was easy to cross.
Two weeks ago there was almost no snow at all - at the most 10 meters. But this time the snow was hard and in the morning it could have been difficult. But the snowfield was small and you could have gone around it!

Route Comment

Probably the most beautiful route starts in the Bluntau Valley near Golling. From Baerenwirt it is about 3 hours to Stahlhaus.
