DATE AND TIME: 030905, 1627; LOCATION: From about halfway between Ft. Garland and San Luis, along C-159 (between mileposts 25-26); CAMERA: Olympus C-740 Ultra Zoom, 3.2 megapixel, 10x optical, 3x digital; DESCRIPTION: A late-afternoon panorama of Culebra Peak and its southern neighbors, looking southeast. FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: Culebra Massif is occupying the left 1/4, while Vermejo Peak (13,723') is the flat summit slightly left of center. "Alamosito" (13,466') is the pointy peak just right of center. Purgatoire Peak (13,676'), Colorado's southernmost named 13er, is just to the right of Alamosito. "UN 13,265" is the pointy peak to the right of Purgatoire Peak. Red Mountain (13,908') is hidden behind Culebra Massif from this angle. There was a dark cloud ceiling hovering over what was an otherwise clear sky, which is why the snowcap looks rather greyish. Here is a much closer view of the upper section of Culebra Massif.

You are turning out to be my southern comphadre (sp?). thanks for all of the submissions, now it looks like you need to climb this peak.

I just wish there wasn't so much red tape, which would make climbing this mountain so much easier. What really sucks is that climbing Culebra is on a weekend-only basis (for three months), AND RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED! This is definitely the most controversial of Colorado's 14ers.
