Looking up the first chute...

Route Beta: Looking up the Class 3 chute on the north side of the summit from the notch. We opted to stay on rock. We started up the left side then quickly traversed (center photo) to the rocks on the right-hand side of the chute. The ridge line in the top-center of the photo is the summit plateau. May 9, 2004.

Hike smart

I stood right there where you took this shot. It was rain, hail, wind and dark, heavy clouds at about 9:30 AM. Exactly when I was looking up the chimney to see if I should go up or not, a lightning hit the summit. It was so much tension in the air, so much pressure, I was very concerned. Once the lightning hit, a tremendous amount of rain and hail started coming down. I decided that next year would be a smarter time to try summit Whitney via mountaineer route. Congrats on your ascent.
