Ghunsa by Frank Smythe, 1931

Ghunsa, the largest Sherpa village near Kangchenjunga. Pphotographed by Frank Smythe in 1931. This photo is from my copy of Smythe's book, The Kangchenjunga Adventure. Compare with this 1899 photo by Vittorio Sella and a 1998 photo taken by me. I carried a photocopy of this picture on my trek and tried to find the same place Smythe stood when he snapped the shutter.

Neat idea

It's amazing what little change there is here. This year I took my son to a small, remote jungle village that I lived in 1976 in Ecuador and I was completely surprised at the amount of change that happened in 27 years.

Re: Neat idea

Thanks. I had not seen Sella's photo until I returned, or I would have brought that along too. Yes, little has changed on the surface, but I doubt if Sella or Smythe had San Miguel beers waiting for them.
