Donner Peak didn't look...

Donner Peak didn't look particularly impressive or welcoming on the morning of March 1, 2003 as Craig and I tried to figure out where the Norwand was. It was snowing very lightly at this point.

What's that at the bottom?

What's that at the bottom of the photo? It looks like an aqueduct, or road embankment or something. I liked all your photos by the way.

Re: What's that at the bottom?

It is a long wooden tunnel covering train tracks. The train crosses Donner Pass there.

Re: What's that at the bottom?

Actually, I don't think it's wood. It looked like a stone/concrete mix but I didn't stare at it too much. It has to be strong enough to withstand years of heavy snowfall. Normally I try to crop out things like that, but the "snowshed" is a pretty integral part of understanding the north side of Donner. On the way out during the winter, typically skiers and hikers will ski down the North Face, stop on top of the snowshed, and traverse over it till you hit the rocks of Snowshed Wall before heading down to the car. I snowshoed on top of it on my way out. You can see them marked on this USSS map. It's what bearbnz calls the China Wall in his summit log. Maybe I should just include some of this in the Overview?
