Will Lou make it across?

Will Lou make it across?

Well, yes. He did every time. I took maybe 5 of these pics which means he jumped this crevasse at least 5 times. This shot is a scan from a slide photo, Kodakcrome ASA 25 film. (Lou is Lou Whitaker) Another shot of Lou is HERE. In fact, this view is my favorite angle. Ira posted one of his pics from the crevasse jumping photo shoot in this book, "An Ice Axe, a Camera, and a Jar of Peanut Butter: A Photographer's Autobiography" The book is still available at Amazon.

Re: OH my gosh!

I met Lou and his twin last August- you will be happy to know they are just fine and in their 70's.

Re: OH my gosh!

I took this pic of Lou in 1969. Let's see,
2006 minus 1969 makes 37 years so far since this shot. April, I do think he no longer is jumping crevasses in this manner.

How...

the hell did I miss this shot? Great stuff. And for '69 or so that's a pretty good picture!

Nice!

Reminds me of this film where someone jumps across a ravine with 2 iceaxes and crampons on. :-)

New Knees

You know Lou has new knees, He's probably out jumping again.

Re: New Knees

Wouldn't that be something? Of course, he probably he'd have to find narrower crevasses to jump. LOL.

Re: fun shot....

It was neat to spend most of a week with the guy. I learned a lot. Jim came up to Muir and entertained our group with the story of the 63 Everest climb. Of course, this was in 1969 so it was still pretty fresh and awe inspiring.
