Overview

San Bernardino East Peak is located within the San Gorgonio Wilderness on the western end of the San Bernardino Mountains. It is the second peak, in a series of peaks, that lie west to east on the San Bernardino crest/ridge, starting with San Bernardino Peak and ending with Mt. San Gorgonio, the highest point in Southern California. Many Hikers will bag this peak, along with the other peaks on the crest, while hiking the San Bernardino Mountain Traverse. This is normally done as a 2-3 day backpack. It can also be climbed as a moderate to strenuous day hike from at least 3 different trailheads. The views from the summit are stellar. One can see much of Southern California (on a clear day) as well as Mt. San Jacinto, Mt. San Gorgonio and Mt. Baldy.

Getting There

To the Momyer Creek Trailhead: From I-10 at Redlands take any Hwy 38 exit north to Hwy 38 and drive northeast for about 14 miles to the intersection with Valley of the Falls Road. Go right towards the town of Forest Falls aprox. 2.9 miles to the signed parking area on the left.

For the San Bernardino Peak Trailhead: Same as above but continue on Hwy 38 to the town of Angeles Oaks and turn right at the sign indicating the San Bernardino Peak Trail. Follow 1W07 signs to the trailhead parking lot, about 1/4 mile.

For the Forsee Creek Trailhead: Same as above but continue on Hwy 38 several miles past Angeles Oaks to Jenks Lake Road on the right. Go right aprox. 0.3 miles to a fork at a sign "Forsee Creek Trail". Turn right and drive about a 1/2 mile to the signed Forsee Creek Trailhead parking area.

Red Tape

For day use a permit is required on any of the trails in the San Gorgonio Wilderness. These are free and self-issued. If camping overnite anywhere within the San Gorgonio Wilderness a permit is also required. These permits can be obtained at the San Bernardino National Forest Mill Creek Ranger Station in Mentone, 34701 Mill Creek Road. You can also request via fax at (909) 794-1125. The Barton Flats Visitor Center on Hwy 38 and the Fawnskin Ranger Station in Big Bear can also issue these permits.

In addition to the wilderness permits a National Forest Adventure Pass is required for each vehicle that is parked at any trailhead. Fees are $5.00 a day or $30.00 for an annual pass. These can be obtained from any of the ranger stations or from many of the local merchants.  According to "tarol" Adventure Passes are now required at only the Vivian, Momyer, and South Fork Trailheads - the other SG Wilderness Trailheads are free.

When To Climb

Year round. Summer months are the most popular for hikers. Great snowshoeing in the Winter.

Camping

Camping is allowed. There are several campgrounds in and around the area and at several of the trailheads. Camping on the mountain or anywhere within the San Gorgonio Wilderness requires a permit that can be obtained from the Mill Creek Ranger Station at 34701 Mill Creek Road, Mentone, CA. Re: phone number is wrong & broken link

Thanks for the information. I have changed the phone number and fixed the broken links on San Bernardino East Peak, Anderson Peak, San Gorgonio and Jepson Peak. Do you know if the fax number is correct?

Wrong Coordinates

The coordinates here point to San Bernardino Peak not San Bernardino East Peak. According to Google Earth and http://www.peakbagger.com/peak.aspx?pid=1410 the correct coordinates are: 34.124785, -116.909861.

Children

Children refers to the set of objects that logically fall under a given object. For example, the Aconcagua mountain page is a child of the 'Aconcagua Group' and the 'Seven Summits.' The Aconcagua mountain itself has many routes, photos, and trip reports as children.
