Overview


Mittaghorn is situated near Ebenefluh on the high ridge from Jungfrau to Breithorn. The mountain is not clearly individualised, especialy on the southern side, and is only 240 m higher than Mittagjoch and 200m higher than Äbeni-Fluejoch. You can find 3 summits on the summit ridge main summit 3897m, central summit 3835m and west summit 3753m.

The mountain has a soft south face in Löthschen valley (Valais) and a very steep nord face in Lauterbrunnen valley (Berner Alpen).

The mountain is known for skiing trip from Löthschental side.

Normal route to Mittaghorn : PD

Access to Hollandia hut:
- Gletscherstafel (Lötschental) 1763 m,
- Gugginalp,
- Langgletscher,
- Lötschenlücke 3178 m,
- Lötschenhütte Hollandia 3235 m (night),

Summit route
- Crevassed Ebnefluhfirn along Anengrat,
- Steeper 50Hm to Anenjoch 3635 m,
- Thin Mittaghorn south ridge to summit.
- possible to visit the 2 more summits to west 30 min. Cornices.

Descent route:
Back to Anenjoch, return -same route to start point.

Route to return to the N side:
There is some exceedingly poor rock on Mittaghorn W ridge route and for this reason it is not recommended as a descent route from this mountain. To return to the N side, either descend to the Lötschental and use public transport, or descend to the Hollandia hut then reach the Schmadrijoch (see Gletscherhorn).

Hollandia hut is accessible from Fafler Alp 1763m in Lötschen valley, Wallis side.
