Overview

Tomyhoi Peak is more visible from the roads in British Columbia than from those in Washington, even though it is situated just south of the US/Canada border. At Chilliwack in the Fraser River Valley Tomyhoi is easily visible. But the most popular route is from the Yellow Aster Butte Trail off State Route 542 east of Bellingham, WA. Even from the Yellow Aster meadows area, the mountain is not particularly visible, being hidden by the approach ridge. However, if what you want is views, this mountain is hard to beat considering the effort and distance required. Grand views of Mt. Baker, Mt. Shuksan, the heart of North Cascade National Park, and even the Coast Range in British Columbia are astounding on a clear day.

Getting There

Drive State Highway 542 east from Bellingham to Glacier, then another 13.5 miles to the highway maintenance sheds. Just past is the junction with road No. 3065. Turn left and drive it for approx 4 miles. Right before an "end of maintained road" sign is the "Yellow Aster Butte" trailhead. This new trail (very popular!) comes to a junction where you can either go straight (to Tomyhoi Lake) or left (to the tarns beneath Yellow Aster Butte). The trail ends just above the tarns and from there you can either scramble up Yellow Aster Butte or continue on to Tomyhoi. Check the trail description for more information, and here for current trail conditions.

Red Tape

All trails and some picnic areas and campsites on the Mt. Baker- Snoqualmie National Forest require a regional pass costing $5/day or $30/year. Golden Age and Golden Access Passport holders may purchase the pass at a 50% discount. The Golden Eagle Passport will not apply to the Regional Northwest Forest Pass.

You can get the passes at these stores or these ranger stations. The pass can also be purchased online from the Washington Trails Association.

When To Climb

Optimal conditions for climbing Tomyhoi Peak occur from June through September, depending on snow and weather conditions.

Camping

Camping is not allowed along the Yellow Aster Butte Trail. The best campsites are at Yellow Aster Meadows among the beautiful tarns in that area.
