Overview

Modjeska Peak, together with Santiago Peak form the famous "Saddleback" that can be seen throughout Orange County. Modjeska is the second highest peak in Orange County and therefore its summit sees a lot less traffic than Santiago, the county high point. In contrast to Santiago, the summit has no antennas or cars and usually no other hikers even on weekends. The summit can be reached from Modjeska Canyon via the Indian Truck Trail, from Santiago Peak via the Main Divide Trail (MDT) and from Silverado Canyon via the Maple Springs Trail (MST). All of these "trails" are 2WD dirt roads that see a lot of mountain bikers and dirt bikes. Also, during winter months MDT and MST are open to autos. There's an alternate more direct Maple Springs Trail without the cars or dirt bikes and more than likely without mountain bikes.

Getting There

Modjeska Canyon and Silverado Canyon both have self named roads that are reached from Santiago Canyon Rd. The west end of Santiago Canyon Rd becomes Chapman Ave and the south end becomes El Toro Rd. Coming from the north on the 5 or 55 freeways take the Chapman exit and head east. From the south exit the 5 North at El Toro and head north (right turn). Each
trailhead is located at the end of its road.
