Overview
Naomi Peak is the highest point in the Bear River Mountains of northern Utah and southern Idaho. While the limestone range is not very high it is extremely rugged, and the views from the top of Naomi are outstanding. Many of the most interesting peaks in the range can be seen from the summit.
If you are hiking in late July or August you will also be able to enjoy another highlight of the Bear River Range: wildflowers. Nowhere else in Utah will you see them in such staggering abundance(will try and grab some photos). A colorful profusion of geraniums, paintbrushes, columbines, lupines, daisies, and mountain sunflowers stretch for miles across the meadows north of Tony Grove Trailhead. It is a shame that these meadows were not included in the 1984 Utah Wilderness Bill that created the Mount Naomi Wilderness Area in the Wasatch-Cache National Forest. Snowmobile operators frequent the area in the winter, and they lobbied successfully to have the watershed east of the peak excluded from the bill. This hike touches only briefly on the eastern boundary of the wilderness area.
Getting There
Form I-15 exit at Exit 364 and head east towards Brigham City for 2.1 miles on US 91. Continue straight through the light while switching to US 89; follow US 89 to Logan, Utah (you stay on 89 for a total of 46 miles to the Tony Grove left hand turn off. But at Logan (25 miles from US 91 and 89 in Brigham City) turn right and follow 89 for 21 miles to the aforementioned turn off to Tony Grove, follow on the local road for 7.0 miles to the Trailhead and also the parking lot for Tony Grove Lake.
Red Tape
No special permits or fees are required. Chemical toilets are at the trailhead.
When To Climb
This peak can be climb in all seasons. The only difference will be the additional 4.5 miles of drainage to hike from US 89 because of road closure during the winter months.
