Overview

Well known Norwegian mountain with a lot of visits partly due to the manned hut at the summit. A lot of people get up 5 in the morning to watch the sunrise over Jotunheimen. There is three standard routes to the summit. One is across the glacier from Sognefjellshytta (glacier knowledge/equipment needed). The routes from Helgedalen and Skogadalsbøen are both easy, and a couple of steep but not airy parts shouldnt put anybody off.

Getting There

From Helgedalen: follow the dirt road turning east from the second turn in the highway above Turtagrø. There is a parking lot after a few hundred meters. The route follows the road through the valley against a mountain pass with a hut. Before the hut, turn left and follow the marked path. Look for red "T"s. The terrain is steep, but the path is still easy to walk. There is no airy or dangerous parts if you follow the path. Near the top is a big drop to the right which could be a problem in bad weather.

Most walkers use about 4 hour to the summit, and three hours back down.

Red Tape

No permit needed. Parking is free. Cannot be easier :)

When To Climb

June to september is best for walkers. Skiing is possible, but there might be a danger of avalanches in the winter. The huts at the relatively flat summit may be difficult to find in foggy weather.

Camping

Camping is allowed in the area. For sleeping in the hut, bring a sleeping bag. It is 24 beds, but quite possible to sleep on the floor.
