Overview
Shastina forms a separate peak ~2 miles west of Mount Shasta's summit. It does not get a lot of respect from climbers because of its bigger 'sister', but could be an excellent destination for folks who enjoy very secluded high altitude camping (Hidden Valley), beautiful views all around and relatively easy climb to the top.
Getting There
Use the same approach as to Mount Shasta.
Park your car at the Bunny Flat, take Bunny Flat trailhead to the Horse Camp. After Horse Camp, take the trail to Hidden Valley (turn left immediately after passing the cabin - you'll see the sign). Best place for the base camp is either in Lower or Upper Hidden Valley.
Red Tape
The following things are required for ascent to Shastina:
- FREE Wilderness Permit (can be filled out at the Mount Shasta Ranger Station or Bunny Flat)
- 3-day Summit Pass for climbing above 12,000' - $15 a person (will be good for both Shasta and Shastina climb if you are hardcore).
Parking is free at the Bunny Flat trailhead.
When To Climb
Best time to climb is between April and July when mountain is covered with snow. Snow makes it an easier ascent to the saddle between Shasta and Shastina, and then to the top. Take your crampons and ice axe with you, it gets pretty steep in some places (30-45 degree slope in the gully)!
Climbing in late August, September and October is doable but not recommended unless you enjoy rapidly melting snow, rock slide and talus.
Camping
Two best places to camp are Horse Camp and Hidden Valley. If you are up for a day hike to the top - overnight stay in Horse Camp costs $5 per tent and $3 per bivy. Campground has fresh water source (yum!) and toilets. For a multi-day trip - take your time and hike to Hidden Valley. There are at least 5 or 6 good spots for the tent and they are rarely taken. Melting snow provides good source of water.
