Hot and Sunny!
Sweeping vistas of the surrounding fields for over 10 miles in most directions (except southwest). Ham radio fanatics preparing for a hamfest with climbers in Colorado's front range.
Walked across the gravel rounabout to the summit. Had a beer and some lunch at the picnic table. Woohoo!

Standard Route
We drove. I nursed at the summit. It was a new nursing-altitude record for me.

#29 SHP
While moving from Chicago to Seattle, we drove across the county and stopped here as our two-plus year blitz of state highpoints drew to a close. It was our 29th state highpoint in 27 months. Our move from United Air Lines to Boeing marked the end of our quick and cheap travel around the US and thus the continuation of the project was at a pace of more like 1 per year rather than one per month. I completed my 49 state high points. in June, 2009.

HP #18
Very easy to find, and easy to drive up to, especially if you have a Hummer! HP #18!

Magic
The top of Kansas was a more magical place than I could have imagined. There may not have been a wizard, but it definitely felt like the land of Oz. I was off the beaten path, but a beautiful place to see with my beautiful family.

Not in Kansas Anymore
Tagged Mount Sunflower on the way out of Kansas - after living there for a year. It (the state) was nice, but flat! The HP - it was quite nice, and also flat.

Sunflower at Night
We decided to drive all of the way back to Wisconsin after climbing Black Mesa in Oklahoma so we hit Mt. Sunflower at 10:30 at night. Took some pictures and signed the register. Drove on to Panorama Point in Nebraska. I will always wonder what the view is like from this highpoint. HP #41.

Mt. Sunflower
Climbed into the "Thick Air" of Kansas the day after Elbert. Quite the scenery change for my 2nd Highpoint, but still fun in it's own way.

Second highpoint with kids, even brought hubby along this time :-) Far different experience from Guadalupe Peak! Missed the challenge, but enjoyed reading the log and notes from owners. Moved on to Colorado, lots of snow - can't wait for Mt. Elbert next year!

Detour off I-70
Stopped by on the way out west. Rough dirt roads leading there. Views are pretty good at the summit. A herd of cattle joined me on the summit.
Flew into Denver and rented a car with Zscapes for 2 days of highpointing. We visited Mt Sunflower on Sept 27th and Black Mesa on Sept 28th. We had perfect weather and both "summits" to ourselves.
Yup, solo trip out here to Podunk. I left Boulder at 8am with my bud's car on loan and drove all the way out there by my lonesome. No trouble finding the mighty peak, spent about 45 mins on top, then did a backflip off of one of the dead tree stumps, a la my trip to Panorama Point. Highpoint #3! Returned to Boulder at 4pm. Paying for gas was kind of a bitch, but hey, "live a little!"

Mt Sunflower
New meaning to the term "drive-up". Neat display at the site. My GPS put us on a shortcut there, but we ended up traveling down a lot of dirt roads. Be prepared to seriously tickle your car's underbelly on the dirt roads in the area. No stores are nearby so gas/food/water up before.

Last Highpoint On This Trip
Definitely whimsical. It was spooky driving back to I70 after dark (especially after driving through a big mud puddle - ugh).

All Alone...
First trip out to the high plains and couldn't help but being struck by how alone we were out there. Just rolling fields in all directions...a strange beauty about it. Loved it!

Drive-Up Summit
You park and walk the last 50 yards. An odd, barren place but nice as it was at sunset. Spitting distance from the Colorado Border.

Sunny, Windy, and Cold. That's what's expected in January. A different highpoint but nice none the less.
