Mount Gould from Allen Mountain

Mount Gould from Allen Mountain

The impressive 3,000 foot east face of Mount Gould is seen from Mount Allen's summit. Mount Gould is often seen in post cards, mostly from the Many Glacier Hotel area. This view of the mountain is rarely seen in media. This is looking west across the Livingston Range, whch makes up the bulk of Glacier. 2006 GMS Mountaineering Week climb of Allen Mountain, Glacier National Park.

Re: great wall

Technical climbs in the area have been done, notably on nearby Mount Siyeh, a fantastic 4,000 foot north facing wall, but the rock in Glacier is typically very bad for technical climbs (loose limestone and sedimentary). A number of well established and "cleaned off" routes do exist in the Park and the list is steadily growing. This particular face in this photo has not been climbed, to my knowledge. Glacier does indeed have some classic climbs available. See "Thin Man's Pleasure" here at SP for starters, keeping in mind that 90% of the rock in Glacier is rotten.

Re: great wall

The NE face - right of center - has been climbed. There is a claim to an ascent of the east face (facing camera), but it is questionable....

See the Mount Gould page and Edwards Guide for details.
