i climbed adams yesterday (7/17/02) and when i walked from the mining shack along the ridge to the other side i found the only windblock area of some stones. when i sat down a football size rock slid away revealing a fresh mound of human feces. i then realized i was in the center of a huge toilet with tp and crap EVERYWHERE!!! look, i have had to use the wilderness as toilet because of my lack of foersight- totally irresponsible- but i was as responsible as i could get. and you NEVER leave tp. wrap it and pack it. i carried out a whole bag of other peoples crappy toilet paper i collected from the summit.

whoever has participated in filling my bag should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. bury it deep in the snow- but never just crap in such a busy area, drop a rock on it and be on your merry way. this may work in the untraveled wilderness- but NOT on the summit of mt adams.

Stupid Permit System

If you arrive from the East (via Goldendale) you will not pass the ranger station. There is no self-purchase permit system in place on the mountain, so unless you detour to the ranger station you will have to park illegally & climb without paying the permit. No idea why the park rangers can't just have a box at Cold Springs where you can drop in an envelope with your fees.
