San Jacinto Peak  Sucess!

Marion Mountain trail up and down. Fantastic hike. My buddy and I hit golf balls off the top towards Palm Springs. Incredible experience.

From Humber Park-in winter

Yesterday, January 12, 2013, Penelope May-Smrz and I started from Idyllwild (Humber Park), hiked the Devil's Slide to the Saddle, up the San Jac trail to the Strawberry Cienega trail junction, then steeply uphill crosscountry to the summit of Marion Mountain. It was cold in Idyllwild and on the mountain (16 degrees in town at 6 am) and the snow was very powdery and unconsolidated. On the upper mountain there is about knee deep snow. We didn't use snow shoes, it was our training hike. From the Humber Park side, the summit is the third one north (the distant one) as one gets to the summit ridge. 10.5 hours from Humber Park RT.

Quick Trip  Sucess!

Early am start - pretty buggy for the lower section of the climb. Weather was pleasant. 3hrs up and took my time wandering back down to give my knees a break on the steep parts.

Nice and shady  Sucess!

It was a hot day, so we appreciated the shade on the way up. Was not digging the constant swarms of flies in the a.m., however. The hike was sustained, but have seen steeper terrain on Shasta and elsewhere. Lots of crowds at the top, spectacular views of the Coachella and San Jacinto valleys. It was cool to see all the windmills from so high up!

Winter hike  Sucess!

Hiked the Marion Mtn. trailhead on early April 2010. Like above lost trail in the snow (snowlevel 6500) early on. Found the junction and navigated by compass, iphone! and map to summit from there. A good day outing

San Jacinto and Drury Peaks  Sucess!

First time up this trail, 3rd time to the summit. Good steep training trail. Added Drury Peak to my list (should have added Jean too since it is so close!) Good way to beat the 110 degree heat in the lowlands. Only one other guy had the same idea and I only saw him near the summit. No other souls on the MMT.

Via Deer Springs Trail from Idyllwild

Penelope May and I hiked the Deer Springs Trail from Idyllwild to a connection with the Marion Mountain Trail and up to the peak on Sunday, April 20, 2008. There is still almost complete coverage of frozen snow in the North Bowl of San Jacinto. After you reach the intersection od Deer Springs and Marion Mtn. Trails there is about a mile long section of frozen snow cover and no sings of trail. We know the way having done this hike a few times before, so no problems for us. Bring crampons if you plan to be in the NE Bowl area early in a morning. 10 Hours RT. The snow might last a few more weeks (mid May?).

Cool, shady trail  Sucess!

A cool and shady route even when it's hot down below. So much less busy than Devil's Slide or the tram trail. A nice moderately steep workout on the way up. Hard on the legs in a few places coming down, but not bad.

Nice winter hike

Penelope and I hiked the San Jac from the Marion Mtn. trailhead on January 25, 2007. We lost the trail soon after the intersection with Deer Springs Tr. and navigated the NW bowl more or less by recollection with some help of compass and a map. The bowl was mid calf deep snow and slowed us down a bit. RT from the trailhead took us just under 10 hours. Good conditioning hike on a day off.

Re: Nice winter hike

Interesting, I'm planning a small weekend hike up to San Jacinto Peak this weekend. Hopefully the snow will have melted by now (given the warm weather). Did you loose the trail because of the snow or was it because it was over grown? So i know what to expect this weekend. thanks

Re: Nice winter hike

Lost the trail in mid calf to knee deep snow. After we met the trail coming from Deer Springs and entered the NE bowl of San Jacinto, for about 1/2 mile, we navigated by map and compass which was fun. Found the trail again later. The temperatures have been very warm the last few days (in Idyllwild) but on the North Side of the peak, snow will remain for some time. The regular route from the tram should be mostly clear but don't hold me to it, I have not been there this winter.
