Hot Day  Sucess!

Took my 11 and 14 yr old boys. We were able to drive all the way to the gated fence. We had a 4x4 pickup truck with good tires, which I would recommend. Camped overnight. Early start next day. The very top was swarmed thousands of with lady bugs. It was hard to sign the register, then we fled back down the peak for refuge. My 11 yr old was fully spent by the time we finished. A serious bushwhack in some stretches.

Remote and tough!  Sucess!

I started walking at Smoothing Iron as the road beyond it was in pretty bad shape requiring beefy tires and good clearance. I would not take a stock SUV up that road. Total round trip distance was 14 miles. The day was overcast and fairly cool (50s) for this time of the year.

Off the radar  Sucess!

Maple Peak is pretty far off the radar for
most AZ hikers, but it has showed up on the prominence
lists. Hiked in Snare Canyon. Shared summit with a
buzzing rattler while storm clouds loomed to
the west - did not linger long.

A long, hot day  Sucess!

Hot, brushy, sticky, bear-y... but I made it.
