That's amazingSo, these are actual vertical caves? How well have they been explored? Are they just cool pits in the ground, or do they also lead to underground labarynth systems? And how deep is the deepest? Have any photos of that one? =-)

Re: That's amazingThere is difference between cave and hole. Basically hole or pit is underground space which expands more in depth than horizontally. Caves have length but don't go as deep.
Karst is very complex. There can be system inside but it can be single hole like this one is (Mamet).
Deepest on Velebit massif is Lukina Jama (Luka's Hole) which has 1394m or 4573ft and is currently 13th in the world. But Lukina Jama is most perpendicular hole in the world! Next is Slovacka Jama (Slovakia Hole) which has been explored so far to depth of 1261m or 4137ft. Both can be deeper because they have water siphon at the current bottom. They dived already in Lukina Jama which was deepest underground dive in history but they didn't reach the end of the water channels. Maybe hole goes deeper behind siphon. Recently Velebita hole was found. It is 582m or 1909ft deep, which isn't so 'impressive' when comparing to the deepest ones but it has highest underground vertically in the world! Lower 516m or 1692ft is completely perpendicular 'tube' with smooth sides. For example its opening is barely noticeable but it expands once you enter. Deepest Lukina Jama has much larger opening but still it isn't as impressive as this one because it is much narrower so not much light goes in and you can't see to deep inside.
There are hundreds of objects. Many have been found but many haven’t and there is enough work on Velebit for generations of speleologists. You can read more on the main Velebit page.
