Makalu, West Pillar

Makalu, West Pillar

Makalu, with the West Pillar clearly visible, taken at about 18,000 feet (5,500m) during the approach to 20,000' Sherpani Col, the first of three high passes en route to the Khumbu. As an attempt to show the scale of this great peak, note the figures from my group on the right skyline ridge, best seen in the full size image. November, 2002

Re: MAKALU - the best

Alan, Thanks for the comment. It is an astonishing mountain.

Of course you cannot tell from the photo, but we could hear the jet stream howl across the summit, like some distant dangerous animal. I knew then that I was not a real mountaineer. I had no desire to go up there.
