Not pointless..

...at all. I rather enjoy reading these trips down memory lane. They can make for some of the best stories, and often are more entertaining than the details of a lot of TRs. I, like you, fell in love with the mountains early, probably preteen. I am sure many others here could tell a similar story.

Knowing the kind of hiking and climbing you love to do now, it's funny reading about your first great trip out west. But don't be so hard on yourself. The park service has done a pretty good job making incredible scenery so accessible from the road and those overlooks. No wonder they are so busy.

Great pics...enjoyable read...and a good idea for a trip to Utah. Thanks, Mark

Re: Not pointless..

Yeah, I'd despise the younger version of myself now! Thanks for reading, Mark.

Re: Not pointless..

Bob, think you're forgetting the words to the song "My Back Pages" by the immortal Bob Dylan ..

"Crimson flames tied through my ears,
Rollin' high and mighty traps ..

Pounced with fire on flaming roads,
Using ideas as my maps;

"We'll meet on edges, soon," said I,
Proud 'neath heated brow ..

Ah, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that NOW ..."

Re: I can relate!

Thanks, Sean. It's funny how some of those units when we were kids just stick with us and influence us always. I hope you get back out to the Northern Rockies; that's my favorite place and like nothing else in this country.

Lower Calf Creek

Found an article about this place in the most recent AAA magazine and I'm always interested in the Grand Staircase-Escalante area because my late brother was instrumental in creating the monument. We haven't been there yet, but plan a trip to Utah, CO, and AZ this year, and having seen your pictures and read your story, Lower Calf Creek has become a "must see!" I loved your story, it's really the story of many of us. We grew up in the West and are totally "hooked" on it, can't get enough of the glorious open spaces. Thanks so much for sharing, even if I'm a couple years late on seeing it.
