Teleferico to Refugio
Started from the top of the Teleferico and hiked up the normal route on Rucu. Went through the notch below Rucu summit and walked to the Guagua refugio. Spent the night there and then walked down into the crater of Guagua. It's technically prohibited to go into the crater because it's in yellow alert, but I told the Refugio worker that I knew the trail and he let us go down. Hitchhiked from Guagua back to Quito.

Route Climbed: Guagua Pichincha - Padre Encantado Traverse.
Hiked with Martin (Austria) from the town of Lloa to Guagua Pichincha's refuge. After making it to the top we continued on our way towards Padre Encantado.
Nice views of the caldera and fumaroles as well of the surrounding mountains.

La Travesia
11/17/09
Slept at the Civil Defense hut on Guagua, privy to lightening storm below. Started hike at 6, summit Guagua at 7, summit Padre Encantado (access from Guagua side) around 9, summit Ruku around 11, out around 12 (Teleferico). Great hike, clear trail the whole way. The crux is the scramble to Guagau peak, but exiting chute to Ruku saddle was also a little dicey. Recommended.

La Travesia
Rucu was lots of fun. Somehow I found myself on some 4th or even 5th class. It was the highlight of the trip and the rest of the traverse was a great little tour of the mountain. Padre Encantado has some interesting cliffs.
