Klenke atop Mauna Loa

Here I am at the summit cairn marking the top of Mauna Loa. My smile belies my headache. Mauna Kea earlier in the day evidently did not acclimatize me. My headache was raging by the time I got back to the car with Michelle. But it had gone away completely by the time we got back to sea level at our condo in Keauhou. March 5, 2007.

Nice pics-

great place, is it not! I'm hoping to spend some more time up there on my next trip and maybe circle the whole caldera. Too bad about your headache - kinda goes with the territory, though!

Are you a lava masochist?

Man, after one week Michelle and I had had enough of lava. It was initially interesting on Mauna Loa but it got old quick--especially for me as I raced ahead as fast as I could to get the summit while Michelle waited (at 13,000 ft). It took me 2 hours to do the remaining 7.6 miles round trip. I can't see why you would want to circumnavigate that crater. Are you a lava masochist or something?

Re: Are you a lava masochist?

Yep - that's me - glutton for punishment! When I go back, I'll definately do some acclimating before - probably camp high on the mountain the night before. I had the headache and severe dizziness as well. Also, this thing is going to erupt sooner or later and when it does, I hope I can get over there to watch. With a decent library of photos of that rarely visited area, I'd probably have some good before-and-after shots.

Re: Are you a lava masochist?

I was perusing this gallery yesterday. There's some great archive photos in there for the ongoing eruption. You will find them worth a look to give you an idea for what the terrain up on Loa would change to if it erupted anew. The captions change when you click the photos.
