Twitching!Both you guys are correct.
The Spanish name mentioned by Visentin, we saw on an information board on top of the castle walls at Ainsa.
I guess Dan lives very close to Red Kite central in Mid-Wales so they're probably as common as pidgeons in his area. I've never seen one in the south of England though.

whoops!sorry guys,
I was reacting from memory after a long drive from Liverpool to Essex and obviously that didn't work in my case. The Gypaetus Barbatus is as the latin name describes it, a Bearded Vulture, not the Red Kite, which I believe has the common Spanish name of "Milano Real" (and as you say "Milvus Milvus" in taxonomy terms)
I will try and do better next time.
