East ridge
Major slog up the ridge from near the road to Lower Onion Valley. I was surprised to find the trail and partial stone building just below the summit ridge. Trip report

Lilley Pass
Morning climb from Onion Valley on a crappy, rainy day. Climbed Independence Peak afterwards.
Had an extra Sunday after finishing another trip early. Nice half/day hike- enjoyed the scree slide down more than the way up though. Superb views.

Took the south chute...
...down and almost got busted 500 ft above the base of the peak on a ledge. Found a class 3 move to get outa the mess only to bitch and moan my way down a nasty talus slope to the Onion Valley trailhead!
Rob and I started at Onion Valley Trailhead at 6:30 on Saturday morning, hiked up over Kearsarge Pass, down past the Kearsarge Lakes and took the John Muir Trail past Vidette Meadow and along Bubb's Creek to Junction Meadow. Our friend Craig started at Road's End and hiked up toward Onion Valley. We met just above Junction Meadow and chatted for a while. We were thinking of doing Mt. Brewer together but decided we wanted more than a one-night trip for that. Rob and I camped at Junction Meadow and hiked out the last 10 miles on Sunday. A gorgeous, two-day backpacking trip. It was a bit windy and cold below Kearsarge Pass but nice everywhere else. My first time at King's Canyon. I'm looking forward to going back!

Fun climb .. well, I wasn't thinking it was fun at the time, while going up the scree and loose rock in Lilley Chute ... but looking back ... yeah, it was cool! Great views of the valley! I would have to imagine this route is more fun than the old mining trails on the other side of the peak.

I was pretty beat from a longer-than-expected outing to Sill the day before, and settled on Kearsarge as a rest day (half-day, really) before a more ambitious hike on the holiday Monday.
The sand slog up Lilley Pass was tedious in the lower portions, but I found a reasonably solid rib part way up that made the climb more tolerable. (The pass is a blast to descend!) This peak was a minor milestone for me: my 50th SPS peak for the year.

Charlie sloan and I tried this peak twice the first time was early may 2002 we got within a 20 min. scramble but we turned back because of nasty weather. The second attempt was a score! We scrambled up a steep chute to the right of lily pass. Awesome views!!
