Kautz Icefall

Kautz Icefall

Looking for a way through the upper Kautz icefall. We mistakenly stayed to the right of the now abandoned upper Camp Hazard biv sites on our first attempt of the Kautz Glacier route and ran into this beautiful mess. We did not find a reasonable crossing and had to descend. July 25, 2003 (Photo by Mike Weber)

In Fred Beckey's

Cascade Alpine Guide, he keeps
mentioning a "steep ice chute"
(about 300' wide), to the west of the Kautz
Ice Cliff.

Too bad you couldn't find a route around
that mess, even though it's beautiful.

Chute

The chute would have been just over the short icefall we're looking to get across. I got a better look the next year when we came back and completed the route.
