Early morning light strikes the upper part of the 10,000' high Lhotse South Face.
It looks like the top would be a cold and unpleasant place to be at this hour!

To get this shot I crawled out of a warm sleeping bag at 5:00AM, hiked 200 feet up the rubble of a moraine that was blocking part of the view, then tried to stay warm while waiting for sunlight to appear, keeping the camera batteries close to my body. Once the light appeared I quickly forgot about the cold.
This shot of Ama Dablam was taken at the same time in the opposite direction.

A cornice broke on the summit ridge. Kukus had a second hand 8mm rope bought in Kathmandu, it also broke and one of the best mountaineers in history met his fate. He had climbed all the 14 8000ers (but Lhotse), by new routes or winter ascents. If he had made it on Lhotse, he had made them all in this way. | | Posted Jul 28, 2006 4:52 am |
